Unplugged: Awareness Messages from Ketchikan Kids
KAP students recorded these short messages about growing up in a world full of screens. Based on scripts from Dr. Crystal Collier of KnowYourNeuro.org, the messages are worth a listen.
Echo Chambers
Kira explains that social media algorithms are designed to hold our attention and wind up creating echo chambers where we just hear the same things over and over. You CAN break free, but it takes being intentional.
Emotional Intelligence
Blaine helps us understand that in the (very near) future, we won't just be competing against humans for jobs. AI can be a cool tool, but we should focus on sharpening our human skills.
AI is a Crutch that Doesn't Pay
Gavin explains that using AI to do your homework may not be the best idea - but maybe not for the reasons you're thinking.
Motivation Suck
You're not lazy, but your brain might just be stuck in screen mode. An eighth-grade student talks about how to get unstuck and back in balance.
Who am I?
River talks about how easy it is to perform a role online instead of just being yourself.
The Comparison Game
Emma shares how social media invites us to compare ourselves to the perfectly curated images and bodies we see online, and some practical tips on how to get out of that head game.
Glamorization
Garrett teaches us how addiction-for-profit industries glamorize risky behavior to make it seem cool, fun, or normal instead of dangerous.
Unplugging
What actually happens when you unplug? Ariel shares about what goes on in our brain when we're brave enough to put our devices down.
Supernormal Stimuli
Your brain is built to respond to certain things. Luke shares about how tech companies use this knowledge against us to create supernormal stimuli.
Good for Anxiety?
Have you ever picked up your phone to relax, only to end up more anxious? Ethan shares some practical tips on how to actually relax.
Support Ketchikan's Kids
This school year, 321 kids came through KAP's doors. This summer, we can only serve about 70. Registration filled up in a few days. The waitlist is still growing.
It's not that families don't want more. The Alaska Afterschool Network just shared new data showing that 1 in 2 Alaska kids whose parents want a summer program can't find or afford one. Cost is the biggest reason why.
KAP's summer program is completely free. No fees, no income requirements, no barriers.
That's what the Unplugged Summer campaign is all about. We're raising $35,000 to give Ketchikan's kids a summer of fishing, hiking, life skills, and cultural learning out on this island we get to call home. We would love your help closing the gap.
None of this is just about keeping kids busy. Clubs, art, sports, books, and time outside aren't extras. They're how a community keeps kids healthy before a crisis ever hits. That's exactly how we see KAP.
Please consider making a gift today so that we can serve even more kids in the months and years to come.
